    Deficiency of the Kidney-yin

    The syndrome is represented by insufficiency of yin fluid in the kidney system.

    Clinical manifestations/Indications: Hollow pain with dizziness, lassitude in loins and knees, tinnitus, insomnia, amnesia, dysphoria with hot sensation in the chest, palms and soles, dry mouth and throat, tidal fever and night sweat, emaciation. For men, penis erecting easily, nocturnal emission, or oligospermia. For women, dream of intercourse, scanty menstruation, amenorrhea, or metrorrhagia and metrostaxis. Red tongue with little fur, thready and rapid pulse, strengthless.

    This syndrome is found in tuberculosis, diabetes mellitus, sterility, sexual neurosis, and chronic pyelitis and chronic nephritis.

    Etiopathology:

    There can be three possibilities as the causes of impairment of the kidney:

    1.      Overstrain of sexual intercourse exhausts kidney-yin;

    2.      Prolonged illnesses impair kidney-yin;

    3.      Impairment of the kidney-yin due to late stages of febrile diseases.

    The viscera and the body lack nourishment if the kidney-yin is deficient. Brains marrow and bones will not be replenished. As a result, asthenic heat is slowly produced in the interior of the body and causes hyperactivity of ministerial fire.

    Therapeutic Principle: Nourishing yin and tonifying the kidney.

    Recipe 1: Bolus as Kidney-Yin-Tonic

    Ingredients: Rhizoma Rehmanniae Praeparata, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Fructus Lycii, Fructus Corni, Radix Cyathulae, Semen Cuscutae, Colla Cornus Cervi, Colla Plastri Testudinis.

    The formulae may be modified in cases of deficiency of genuine yin due to older ages, chronic disorders, or recovery stages of febrile diseases.

    Clinically and experimentally, the recipe has the effects of nourishing the kidney-yin, improving acuity of vision, astringing seminal emission and sweating, tonifying yang and nourishing yin, strengthening the waist and knees and reinforcing muscles and joints, and etc.

    Cautions: Prolonged usage might obstruct spleen and stomach systems. Pericarplum Citri Reticulatae, Fructus Amomi or others can be added to regulate the qi flow and enliven the spleen.

    Recipe 2: Bolus of Six Drugs Including Rehmannia

    Ingredients: Rhizoma Rehmanniae Praeparata, Fructus Corni, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Rhizoma Alismaatis, Poria, Cortex Moutan Radicis.

    The formulae can be altered accordingly to treat many other diseases indicating syndrome due to the deficiency of vital essence of liver and kidney such as hypertension, vegetative nerve functional disturbance, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, chronic nephritis, hyperthyroidism, pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic urinary infection, bronchial asthma, amenorrhea, scanty menstruation, or infantile dysplasis and interlectual hypoevolutism.

    Clinically and experimentally, the recipe nourishes the body and consolidates the constitution, inhibits hypercatabolism, reduces excitement of the brain, adjusts endocrine function and vegetative nerve, lowers blood pressure and blood sugar, induces diuresis, improves the function of kidney, as well as promotes the epithelial hyperplasia of the esophagus and prevents cancer, etc.

    Cautions: This formulae is a bit greasy. Care monitoring is necessary for those who have weak spleen system.
