    Insufficiency of Kidney-yang

    The syndrome is represented by insufficiency of yang in the kidney system.

    Clinical manifestations/Indications: Headache with dizziness, forgetfulness, lassitude in the loins, legs and feet, cold sensation in the lower part of the body, dysuria or polyuria. In male cases, severe cases may have impotence and seminal emission. In female cases, inability of pregnancy by cold womb. Bulgy and pale tongue, faint and deep pulse.

    This syndrome is found in chronic nephritis, chronic enteritis, sexual neurosis, adrenocortical failure, and hypothyroidism.

    Etiopathology:

    There can be three possibilities that cause the insufficiency of the kidney-yang:

    1.      Patients with constitution of yang deficiency;

    2.      Senile asthenia of the kidney;

    3.      Impairment of the kidney-yang by prolonged illness or excessive sexual activities.

    This syndrome may cause the fire of life-gate to decline, thus further causing:

    1.      The body loses its warmth;

    2.      Retention of fluid in the body;

    3.      Insufficient reproduction function.

    Therapeutic Principle: Warming and tonifying kidney-yang.

    Recipe: Bolus for Tonifying the Kidney-qi

    Ingredients: Ramulus Cinnamomi, Radix Aconiti Praeparata, Cortex Moutan Radicis, Rhizoma Alismatis, Poria, Fructus Corni, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Radix Rehmanniae.

    The formulae may be modified to treat chronic nephritis, diabetes, vegetative nerve disturbance, Alzheimer's disease, prostatic hyperplasia, infertility, amenorrhea that show syndrome of insufficiency of kidney-yang.

    Modern researches have shown that this recipe can tranquilize the mind, promote blood circulation, lower blood pressure, strengthen kidney function, protect the liver, etc.

    Cautions: Patients with the syndromes of hyperactivity of fire and dryness with heat are not suitable to administer this recipe.
